NEWS and deterioration in secondary care

The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) is a tool which improves the detection and response to clinical deterioration in secondary care. It is a key element of patient safety and improving patient outcomes. It provides a single common language for deterioration of patients and it indicates how ‘unwell’ someone is and what action to take. NEWS2 has been used in national hospitals and ambulance Trusts since April 2019.

By the end of the course learners will be able to;
- understand the need for a National Early Warning Score (NEWS) and the evidence to support its use
- raise awareness and increase understanding of how the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) is used in the recognition and response to deterioration in secondary care settings
- understand the purpose of SBARD as a structured communication tool
