NICE Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis

To examine the NICE quality standard recommendations for the management of food allergy and anaphylaxis and to apply the knowledge gained from working through the tools into practice.

This tool is divided into 4 main sections:

  1. Understanding the quality standards on food allergy and anaphylaxis
  2. Taking an allergy-focused clinical history and the use of tools to aid the diagnosis of food allergy
  3. Referral criteria for food allergy and anaphylaxis
  4. Demonstration of the adrenaline auto injector device


  • describe how to take an effective allergy-focused clinical history in children and young people with suspected food allergy
  • identify and use validated tools to support the effective diagnosis when either IgE or non-IgE-mediated food allergy is suspected in children and young people
  • use appropriate referral criteria and pathways to refer patients with suspected food allergy from primary care for further investigation
  • explain the referral pathway that exists from accident and emergency department or primary care to specialist service post-emergency treatment for suspected anaphylaxis
  • demonstrate the use of the adrenaline device to patients and/or parents and/or carer
  • provide effective ongoing support to patients both in hospital and community settings who have been prescribed an adrenaline device.
